Amazon has unveiled three premium tablets running full Android with access to the Google Play Store, marking a major shift from its budget-oriented Fire tablet lineup.
The new devices include the 12-inch Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, 11-inch Alexa Tablet 11 and 8-inch Alexa Tablet 8, with prices ranging from $230 to $550. They feature aluminum unibody designs and optional Nanomatte displays. Amazon will no longer manufacture its previous Fire tablet models.
Amazon hardware chief Panos Panay said the devices were redesigned from the ground up to address limitations associated with earlier Fire tablets, including restricted app availability and plastic construction.
The new tablets will ship October 14 in the U.S., Mexico and Canada. Child-focused versions will also be available with protective cases and a one-year Amazon Kids Plus subscription.
