Amazon plans to hire more than 300,000 seasonal workers across its US fulfillment and transportation network for the holiday shopping season, marking a 20% increase from last year and its first hiring expansion in three years.
The move contrasts with a broader slowdown in retail recruitment. Seasonal retail hiring is expected to fall below 450,000 jobs nationwide, its lowest level since 2008, as traditional retailers such as Walmart and Target increasingly rely on existing employees.
Amazon is offering temporary workers an average wage of $20 per hour, alongside health plans starting at $5 per week and $5 copays for eligible seasonal employees.
The trend highlights a shift in seasonal employment toward e-commerce fulfillment and delivery, even as other retailers adopt more selective hiring strategies.
