Amazon Web Services will invest $1 billion over five years in U.S. communities hosting data centers, CEO Matt Garman announced Friday, as the company faces growing local opposition over electricity and water consumption.
The “Built Together” program will fund education and workforce training, including out-of-pocket costs for an estimated 300,000 students. Amazon also said the initiative will support energy upgrades that could save participating households about $700 annually.
The company is responding to more than 100 data center moratoriums and protests reported across 42 states over power costs, water use and project transparency.
Garman said the company sees urgency in expanding data center capacity as countries compete to develop artificial intelligence infrastructure and capture its economic benefits.
