Ford narrowly retained its No. 3 position in US vehicle sales during the third quarter, despite a year-over-year decline, according to the automaker.

Ford sold 507,395 light-duty vehicles, down 6.6% from a year earlier. Hyundai, including Kia and Genesis, reported 506,200 vehicles, a 5.4% increase.

The results came after Cox Automotive had forecast Hyundai would overtake Ford for third place for the first time. Both automakers exceeded those expectations, but Ford maintained its ranking by a small margin.

Hyundai has expanded its US presence this year, while Ford has faced production challenges involving its F-Series pickup trucks. Supplier fires last year disrupted manufacturing and affected sales of the key truck line.
