Amazon-owned Zoox has become the first autonomous vehicle company to receive U.S. approval to operate paid robotaxis without traditional driving controls.
According to federal regulators, the approval allows Zoox to deploy up to 2,500 steering-wheel-free vehicles annually over the next two years.
The report said the robotaxis are designed with two inward-facing rows of seats and do not include steering wheels or pedals, making them fully autonomous by design.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the approval can be revoked if significant safety concerns emerge.
The agency also said it is working on updated federal regulations governing automated driving systems as autonomous vehicle technology continues to advance.
