Americans could soon face higher strawberry prices as the Trump administration investigates whether Mexican growers are selling winter-harvested strawberries in the US at unfairly low prices.
The Commerce Department is examining a trade complaint filed by Strawberry Growers for Fair Trade, a coalition of Florida producers. A finding against Mexican growers could lead to antidumping tariffs on imports.
The Commerce Department is expected to issue a preliminary finding by August 18, although any tariff rate could later change.
Supporters of the case argue cheaper Mexican imports have taken market share from US farmers. However, higher duties could increase costs for consumers. The report noted that recent tariffs on Mexican tomatoes coincided with higher prices, although weather conditions also contributed to the increase.
