Ancient Titanosaur Eggs Reveal How Giant Dinosaurs Nested In Cold Regions

The discovery provides the southernmost definitive evidence of dinosaur eggs and indicates titanosaurs nested at roughly 55 to 60 degrees south.

Fossilized eggshells discovered in southern Argentina suggest some of the largest dinosaurs could reproduce at high latitudes, according to CNN. Researchers found 255 fragments in the Chorrillo Formation, dating back about 68 million years.

The discovery provides the southernmost definitive evidence of dinosaur eggs and indicates titanosaurs nested at roughly 55 to 60 degrees south.

Scientists believe the giant plant-eaters may have used mound nests made from vegetation and soil. Decomposing plant material likely generated heat, while the covered nests helped prevent their porous eggs from drying out.

The finding challenges the idea that titanosaurs only traveled to high-latitude regions during warmer periods. Paleontologists said the evidence suggests they could complete their reproductive cycle there.

Titanosaurs included some of the largest animals ever known, with individuals estimated to weigh up to 75,000 kilograms. Despite their enormous adult size, their eggs were relatively small and may have held about four liters of liquid.
