Republican U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs has secured his party's nomination for Arizona governor after defeating fellow Rep. David Schweikert with more than 71 percent of the vote.

Biggs will now challenge incumbent Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs in November in one of the nation's closely watched gubernatorial races.

According to the report, President Donald Trump's endorsement and strong grassroots support from Turning Point Action played a major role in Biggs' decisive victory.

Schweikert struggled to build financial support despite presenting himself as a fiscal conservative alternative.

Democrats are expected to campaign against Biggs by highlighting his leadership of the House Freedom Caucus and his opposition to certifying Arizona's 2020 presidential election results following the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot, the report said.

The nomination also revives debate over whether Trump-backed Republican candidates can attract enough independent voters in Arizona after recent statewide election losses.

Election Day was further complicated by temporary power and connectivity issues at polling locations in Maricopa County.
