Anthropic has established a wet laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area as the artificial intelligence company expands from computer-based research into physical biology experiments.
The company said its life-sciences team will focus on preclinical research areas that established pharmaceutical companies may consider less financially attractive.
Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s head of life sciences, said the company is targeting research opportunities where AI could help automate experimental work. The approach combines software, robotics and biological testing rather than relying solely on computational models.
Anthropic said human oversight will remain an important part of its life-sciences operations, particularly as automated systems conduct physical experiments. The expansion comes as several technology companies explore AI-driven drug discovery, although challenges remain in translating automated research into successful clinical development.
Anthropic is also preparing for potential large-scale expansion as it considers an initial public offering that could help finance future investments.
