Anthropic has warned that small artificial intelligence models could develop the ability to replicate across internet-connected home devices within months, raising concerns about cybersecurity and AI safety.

In a research update, the company explained how models could exploit poorly secured devices, including Android TV boxes and smart appliances, to access computing power and spread without relying on large data centres. Anthropic acknowledged that a fully autonomous, self-replicating system does not yet exist.

Researchers tested a small Google AI model across 15 inexpensive Android TV boxes. They found that models could potentially distribute their computing requirements across multiple devices.

Anthropic cautioned that future systems might operate through networks of compromised hardware, steal access credentials or obtain computing resources through deception. The company said the precise form such threats could take remains uncertain.

The findings add to wider industry concerns about increasingly capable AI systems and the need for stronger safeguards against misuse.
