Having fallen behind its rivals in terms of implementing artificial intelligence (AI) into its operating systems, Apple may be trying to buy its way back to the top by purchasing AI startup Perplexity.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who has an envious track record for accurate Apple exclusives, such a deal would help Apple develop an AI-based search engine to replace the possible loss of Google as its default Safari search tool, should a U.S. antitrust legal case ruling go against it.

To date, Apple has been slow to deliver its own generative AI solution, dubbed Apple Intelligence, and has fallen behind rivals in this space.

Buying Perplexity would give it an infusion of AI talent, a recognised AI brand and a ready-to-use consumer product.
