A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of deliberately starting one of three major wildfires devastating the Spokane area in eastern Washington, reported by CNN.
Authorities said Aaron F. Farinacci was booked on a preliminary charge of first-degree arson in connection with the Old Trails Fire after investigators linked him to the fire's point of origin.
More than 700 homes and other structures have been destroyed, while another 10,000 remain at risk. Around 65,000 residents have been evacuated, although no deaths or injuries have been reported.
The report said a witness saw the suspect kneeling in grass near where the fire later began. Investigators cited physical evidence and body camera footage in obtaining an arrest warrant.
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson described the destruction as devastating, saying entire neighborhoods had been wiped out by the fast-moving fires.
