NASA has released a historic “Earthset” image captured by the Artemis II crew during their recent lunar flyby, reported by multiple outlets. The photograph shows Earth descending below the Moon’s horizon, echoing the iconic “Earthrise” image taken during the Apollo 8 mission in 1968.
According to the report, the image was taken from the Orion spacecraft by astronauts Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch, Victor Glover and Canadian Jeremy Hansen. The mission marks the first crewed return to the Moon in over five decades and a key step toward future lunar landings.

The Artemis II crew captured this view of an Earthset on April 6, 2026, as they flew around the Moon. The image is reminiscent of the iconic Earthrise image taken by astronaut Bill Anders 58 years earlier as the Apollo 8 crew flew around the Moon. pic.twitter.com/ag72r97wzb
The report said the Artemis II crew is now heading back to Earth, with a planned splashdown in the Pacific later this week. Scientists are analyzing a steady stream of images and data transmitted from the spacecraft.
NASA officials view the mission as a major milestone in restoring U.S. leadership in deep space exploration and advancing plans for sustained lunar presence.
