Bayer has secured a legal victory after a Missouri jury unanimously ruled in favour of Monsanto in a lawsuit brought by three women who alleged that Roundup weedkiller caused their non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Theresa Aretino, Cynthia Fernandez and Betty Larkin had pursued claims involving product design defects, fraud and negligence. The verdict marks the first trial since the US Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that plaintiffs cannot argue Roundup labels should have carried cancer warnings not required by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Bayer is separately seeking approval for a proposed $7.25 billion settlement covering approximately 65,000 pending Roundup lawsuits.

The company maintains that glyphosate-based Roundup is safe, citing the EPA's regulatory position. However, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified glyphosate as "probably carcinogenic" in 2015.

Bayer continues to dispute that assessment while defending the product worldwide.
