China is asking Germany to help prevent the European Union from adopting protectionist trade measures against Beijing, days before Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned US visit, according to China’s Foreign Ministry.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged German counterpart Johann Wadephul to support dialogue and free trade within the EU. Brussels is preparing to review its growing trade deficit with China and consider new measures over concerns about Chinese trade practices and industrial competition.
Despite the tensions, China became Germany’s largest trading partner again in 2025, surpassing the US.
The ministers also discussed Taiwan, Iran and Ukraine. Germany said trade relations should follow fair rules and urged Beijing to use its influence to encourage peace talks over Ukraine and help ease tensions involving Iran.
