US, China Discuss AI Safety And Trade Ahead Of Trump-Xi Meeting

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described his meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng as successful ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington on September 24.

According to Bessent, the discussions covered artificial intelligence and trade. Washington proposed creating a US-China AI Dialogue, including a system for notifying each other about AI incidents that could reach the level of national security concerns.

Bessent said greater transparency between the world’s two leading AI powers would be important as their technological competition intensifies.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the two countries have also activated the US-China Board of Trade. The mechanism could help identify groups of goods for potential future negotiations, including Chinese consumer products and US energy, agricultural and medical goods.

The upcoming summit is expected to address tariffs and broader economic tensions. The current trade truce, which includes suspended higher US tariffs on Chinese imports, is scheduled to expire November 10. The agreement also covers Chinese rare-earth exports and purchases of US agricultural products.
