Beluga Whale Peekachu Dies During Rescue Transfer To Chicago

Caretakers had observed early signs of improvement following the move but discovered that Peekachu was dehydrated and struggled to socialize.

A 23-year-old beluga whale named Peekachu died Tuesday at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, just days after being transported from Marineland in Ontario as part of a major rescue effort.

Caretakers had observed early signs of improvement following the move but discovered that Peekachu was dehydrated and struggled to socialize. She was also blind in one eye. Staff were attempting to rehydrate her with food and medication when she suddenly died.

Peekachu was among eight belugas transported from Marineland this summer. The broader rescue operation aims to relocate 30 beluga whales and four dolphins from the Canadian marine park.

Marineland has recorded 20 whale deaths since 2019, including 19 belugas, according to provincial data. Shedd Aquarium said it will release a necropsy report once available.

The Canadian government approved the animal transfers in January. Other rescued whales are being relocated to facilities including Georgia Aquarium, SeaWorld locations in Texas and California, and Oceanografic Valencia in Spain.
