The Federal Aviation Administration approved Boeing’s 737 Max 10 on Tuesday, clearing the final variant in the manufacturer’s best-selling 737 Max family after years of delays.

Certification was slowed by heightened scrutiny following the 2018 and 2019 Max crashes, along with engineering changes to the engine anti-icing system and a navigation system glitch that required federal review.

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said in September that orders for the Max 10 account for about 30% of the company’s backlog. Boeing is also increasing production of its Max and Dreamliner aircraft.

Airlines are preparing for the aircraft’s eventual entry into service. Alaska Airlines plans to offer lie-flat seats on some Max 10s, while United, American and Delta are awaiting deliveries or preparing for their fleets.

Although the approval clears a major regulatory hurdle, airlines will need months to adjust schedules before passenger services begin. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the agency would continue holding Boeing to the highest safety standards.
