Brazil’s presidential election is headed for an October 25 runoff after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro failed to secure the 50% of votes required to win outright.

Electoral court data showed Bolsonaro leading the first round with more than 55.8 million votes, compared with nearly 53.2 million for Lula. The Organization of American States reported that voting was conducted smoothly and safely.

The runoff campaign will give both candidates three weeks to seek support from moderate voters. Rival candidates Ronaldo Caiado and Renan Santos have said they will not endorse either contender.

Bolsonaro has campaigned on securing the release of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, while Lula faces criticism over affordability concerns and a corruption scandal.

The winner will take office on January 5, 2027, and govern Brazil, Latin America’s largest economy, with the country’s foreign policy and relationship with the United States among key issues.
