Canada Cancels Joint Gordie Howe Bridge Ceremony Over US Tariff Threats

The report said Canada will instead hold its own opening ceremony on Friday. Despite the diplomatic dispute, the bridge is still scheduled to open next Monday as planned.

Canada has cancelled plans for a joint opening ceremony for the Gordie Howe International Bridge, citing rising trade tensions with the United States.

According to Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson's office, a cross-border celebration was deemed inappropriate after President Donald Trump threatened to impose 50 percent tariffs on Canadian products within 30 days.

The report said Canada will instead hold its own opening ceremony on Friday. Despite the diplomatic dispute, the bridge is still scheduled to open next Monday as planned.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, which connects Windsor, Ontario, with Detroit, Michigan, had already faced delays after the Trump administration sought to renegotiate aspects of the project following objections from the Moroun family, owners of the competing Ambassador Bridge.

Officials said the bridge remains on track to begin operations, marking a significant addition to trade and transportation infrastructure between the United States and Canada despite ongoing political and trade disagreements.
