Alberta voters have rejected a move toward independence, with roughly three-quarters backing continued membership in Canada, according to unofficial results reported by CNN. Around 45% of polls had reported by early Tuesday, with approximately one-quarter supporting a second referendum on separation.
The result delivers a setback to separatist activists who argue that federal policies disadvantage the oil-rich province and threaten its energy industry. The campaign gained visibility online, and some leaders met with members of US President Donald Trump’s administration to seek support.
Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the outcome, saying Canadians would move forward together. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also expressed satisfaction with the result, while separatist activist Jeffrey Rath described winning support from roughly one-quarter of voters as an achievement for his movement.
