Canada's ambassador to the United States has sought to reassure businesses and investors about the future of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), describing ongoing discussions surrounding the trade pact as constructive and productive.
Speaking before business leaders in Toronto, Mark Wiseman emphasized that concerns about an imminent disruption to the agreement may be overstated.
He noted that the current framework remains in force and includes provisions that allow the three member countries to extend its duration well into the future.
He pointed out that while political debate around the trade deal continues, the United States has not initiated formal withdrawal procedures despite periodic criticism of the pact by President Donald Trump.
The ambassador's comments come as businesses across North America monitor the review process closely.
Despite optimism regarding the agreement itself, significant trade issues remain unresolved. Canada continues to seek relief from U.S. tariffs affecting steel, aluminum, and automotive products.
Those measures remain a source of friction between the two countries and are expected to be a major focus of future negotiations.
For now, Canadian officials are signaling confidence that the broader trade relationship remains stable and that ongoing discussions will help preserve the economic benefits the agreement provides to businesses and consumers throughout North America.
