A new Reuters-Ipsos poll shows broad public opposition to President Donald Trump’s latest moves involving Canada, including his push to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” and impose new tariffs on Canadian goods.
According to CNN, 63% of Americans oppose the proposed lake name change, while only 14% support it. Opposition extends into Trump’s own party, with Republicans rejecting the move by a 43%-33% margin.
The survey found 46% of Americans believe the United States bears greater responsibility for the dispute, compared with 12% who blame Canada. Forty percent expect the tariffs to hurt their personal finances, versus 4% who expect benefits.
The findings could create political risks for Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterms, particularly in competitive states bordering Canada. However, the electoral impact remains uncertain.
