Childcare Assistance Waitlists Grow In 23 States And DC

Hundreds of thousands of children are waiting for childcare assistance as waitlists have expanded across 23 states and Washington, DC, following the expiration of $28 billion in pandemic-era funding in late 2024.

An Associated Press analysis found that states are struggling to meet demand as families face rising costs for essentials such as food and gas. Some parents have resorted to bringing their children to work or school after being placed on assistance waitlists.

Indiana took steps to address the problem after Gov. Mike Braun announced $200 million in surplus state funds for its childcare assistance program in April. The funding is expected to help about 8,000 children leave the state’s waitlist.

Although 40 congressional Republicans called for “robust” childcare funding this year, the Republican-led Congress did not extend federal support. Advocates say the growing waitlists represent only part of a broader affordability problem facing families who need childcare assistance.
