China Seeks Answers After Man Dies Shortly After Entering ICE Custody

Wei was the fifth Chinese national to die in U.S. custody since March 2025, according to the report.

China is seeking answers from U.S. authorities after a 51-year-old Chinese national died days after being transferred into Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody in the Northern Mariana Islands.

Lianyong Wei was arrested on August 21 following allegations of assault and transferred to ICE custody the next day while facing removal proceedings. Guards later found him unresponsive during morning checks at a Saipan detention facility on August 23. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles said it had expressed serious concerns to U.S. authorities and called for a thorough investigation into the cause of death and measures to prevent similar incidents.

Wei was the fifth Chinese national to die in U.S. custody since March 2025, according to the report.

ICE has not confirmed whether he received a required medical intake screening within his first 12 hours in custody. Northern Mariana Islands officials are reviewing procedures surrounding the incident.
