China warned that any military involvement by Japan in the Taiwan issue would be treated as an act of aggression and would prompt a firm response from Beijing, according to remarks made at the United Nations.
Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, said Japan was attempting to justify intervention in Taiwan under the label of collective self-defense. He described such claims as violations of international obligations and urged other nations to oppose them, according to China’s state broadcaster CCTV.

The warning came as the United States and Japan began their annual Iron Fist military drills, which Beijing views as interference in the Taiwan issue.
China considers Taiwan part of its territory and says it reserves the right to use force if necessary. Fu’s comments follow earlier sharp criticism of Japanese leaders and signal that tensions between Beijing and Tokyo remain high.
