Chinese airlines are cutting Japan-bound flights as Beijing urges citizens to avoid travel following a diplomatic clash over Taiwan, Nikkei Asia reported. Updated booking schedules show sharp reductions beginning late November.

Air China will scale back Shanghai–Osaka service from 21 flights a week to 16 on Nov. 30 and cut Chongqing–Tokyo flights from seven to four starting Dec. 1. Planned increases on the Beijing–Sapporo route have also been canceled.
China Eastern will suspend Chengdu–Osaka flights and reduce Wuhan–Osaka service. Sichuan Airlines is planning similar cuts.
A noticeable trend of cancellations for Japan-bound flights, hotel bookings, and tour groups has emerged following travel warnings from Chinese authorities, urging citizens to avoid travel to #Japan.

Major Chinese carriers have offered free cancellations for Japan trips since Nov. 15, after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi warned that a Taiwan crisis could threaten Japan’s security.
Hong Kong’s Greater Bay Airlines is also waiving fees for Japan-bound travelers. Bloomberg estimates Japan could lose up to $1.2 billion in tourism revenue by year’s end due to Chinese cancellations.
