American Eagle Outfitters has stumbled upon an obvious, ageless, truth: Attractive women make good models.
The brand’s shares spiked more than 4% on July 24 after “soaring in premarket trading,” according to CNBC. This comes after the clothing retailer announced actress Sydney Sweeney will star in their fall campaign.
The campaign, titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” features the denim-clad actress striking a series of provocative poses. The thus-released photos and videos appear to be a resounding hit among X users. One ad can be viewed here.
Some note that Sweeney’s star power can buoy even the strangest of products, like soap made from her bathwater. Dr. Squatch, a personal care company, announced said soap in May.
“Introducing: Sydney’s Bathwater Bliss,” the company captioned an Instagram picture of Sweeney in a bathtub. “We created a limited-edition soap infused with [Sweeney’s] ACTUAL bathwater. Why? Because y’all wouldn’t stop asking.”
Inevitable and well-deserved allegations of perversion aside, servicing an unmet consumer desire is just good business.
Some X users suggest that Sweeney’s American Eagle campaign is a sign that corporations are finally abandoning the “woke” posture they adopted sometime in the mid 2010s.
For a few, long, years, it seemed as though legacy brands were competing to tank their literal and cultural stock as quickly as possible.
Car company Jaguar saw a total collapse in sales following a “non-binary” makeover in November 2024. Apparel brand Calvin Klein subjected New Yorkers to a 4,000 square foot billboard featuring a scantily clad, “proudly plus-size,” indie rapper in 2019, according to the New York Post. American Eagle themselves featured a models of a different heft in their fall 2019 campaign, which proudly boasted the introduction of an expanded size range of 00 to 24, according to Glamour.
Though it may be too early to declare victory over unsightly advertisements, one hopes brands are taking careful note of this Sweeney boom.
