The fate of Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook remains uncertain after a federal judge in Washington, D.C., heard arguments Friday over President Donald Trump’s attempt to fire her.
Cook’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, urged Judge Jia Cobb to block Trump’s move while the case proceeds, calling allegations of mortgage fraud leveled by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte “a smear campaign.” The Justice Department countered that the president has discretion to determine legal cause for removal.

Cook, the first Black woman to serve on the Fed’s Board of Governors, argues her 14-year term cannot be cut short without proven misconduct. Trump insists Pulte’s accusations justify dismissal, while Pulte has filed new criminal referrals.
The Fed told the court it would comply with any ruling. Analysts say the Supreme Court may ultimately decide the case, which could determine both Cook’s future and the Fed’s independence.
