Cuban authorities say suspects detained after a February armed incursion from the United States have confessed and are cooperating with investigators. Forensic examinations reportedly confirmed that seized weapons and explosives were operational.
On February 25, a speedboat carrying 10 Cuban-origin men from the United States allegedly entered Cuban waters and opened fire on a coast guard vessel near Cayo Falcones. Four attackers were killed, and a Cuban captain was wounded.
Interior Ministry official Col. Francisco Estrada Portales identified Amijail Sánchez, whom the United Nations lists as a terrorist, as the person who fired the initial shots, citing detainees’ confessions.
Estrada said Cuba shared its findings with Washington but had received no response as of Monday. The case unfolds amid heightened tensions over US energy restrictions targeting Cuba.
