Shares of Deoleo, the world's largest olive oil company, fell 17.8% on Thursday after Spanish rivals Dcoop and Acesur announced plans to acquire the business.
Under the proposed arrangement, both companies will hold equal 50% stakes, creating a larger Spanish player in the global olive oil market. Dcoop said the deal aims to encourage worldwide consumption and improve value for farmers across the supply chain.
Despite Thursday's decline, Deoleo shares have gained approximately 55% since the start of the year, supported by moderating olive oil prices and stronger US sales.
Spain remains a leading global producer, but the industry has faced supply volatility due to climate conditions, water shortages and crop diseases. Deoleo's CEO said prices were stabilising after the difficult 2022-2024 period.
