At least eight people were killed and 11 injured after a car explosion near the historic Red Fort in New Delhi, India, on Monday. Police said the blast took place in a densely populated area near a metro station, though the cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

Multiple vehicles, including six cars and three autorickshaws, caught fire following the blast, Delhi’s deputy fire chief confirmed. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, while police cordoned off the area and urged people to stay away.

Footage broadcast on local television showed flames and thick smoke rising from the site, with witnesses reporting a “massive sound” that shook nearby buildings. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of foul play.

The Red Fort, a 17th-century Mughal monument and UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of India’s most visited landmarks and a major symbol of national heritage.
