Defense Secretary Says Iran War Has Cost U.S. $37.5 Billion

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told the Senate Appropriations Committee that the U.S. military campaign against Iran has cost an estimated $37.5 billion.

According to the report, Hegseth defended a $95 billion Republican budget package, arguing that the funding is necessary to support national priorities as lawmakers debate spending ahead of the midterm elections.

The report said the proposed budget includes $10 billion in assistance for farmers affected by President Donald Trump's tariff policies and another $10 billion for voting law initiatives.

During the hearing, Hegseth also faced questions over the human cost of the conflict after Pentagon figures showed 17 U.S. service members had died and nearly 450 had been injured since the fighting began.

According to the report, the hearing was marked by criticism from Democratic lawmakers and interruptions by protesters.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer questioned Hegseth's handling of casualty information, while Senator Patty Murray cautioned against the risk of a prolonged military conflict.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, meanwhile, continued to support the budget resolution, saying the administration remains focused on resolving the crisis.
