Former Houston Mayor and Democratic Texas Rep. Sylvester Turner died Tuesday night just months after winning election to Congress, according to multiple reports.

Turner was 70 years-old and was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2022. He attended President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress Tuesday evening.

He succeeded long-time Texas Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, who passed away in office in July 2024, to represent Texas’s 18th Congressional District. Turner served as the mayor of Houston, Texas, from 2016 to 2024 and served in the Texas House of Representatives for nearly three decades.

“The Houston Police Officers’ Union mourns the loss of Congressman Sylvester Turner, a steadfast advocate for our city and former mayor of Houston,” the Houston Police Officers’ Union wrote on X Wednesday morning. “His unwavering commitment to public service and dedication to improving the lives of Houstonians will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
