The 2026 Senate race remains closely contested, but prediction market traders are now giving Democrats a narrow advantage in the fight for control of the chamber.

Kalshi traders put Democrats’ chances of winning the Senate at 54%, while Polymarket traders put them at 59%. Before the US-Iran war began in February, Republicans had roughly 60% odds of retaining control on both platforms.

The shift has coincided with renewed pressure from rising energy prices. US oil has climbed above $100 per barrel, while gasoline has topped $4 a gallon nationally and diesel prices have reached record highs.

Republicans currently hold the Senate majority and are defending 20 of the 33 seats being contested this year. Democrats would need to win several states that President Donald Trump carried comfortably in 2024, including Alaska, Texas and Ohio.

Recent polling has also shown a favorable environment for Democrats. A New York Times/Siena poll reported Democratic congressional candidates leading Republicans nationally among likely voters by nearly nine percentage points.
