DOJ to Investigate AI-Related Crimes, Attorney General Blanche Says

Attorney General Todd Blanche said Tuesday that the Justice Department will investigate criminal activity involving artificial intelligence while maintaining that the agency should not take on a new regulatory role.

Blanche said existing federal laws can be applied to unlawful conduct involving AI, keeping the department focused on criminal enforcement rather than creating additional rules for the technology. His comments came as the Trump administration continues to argue against expanded federal AI regulation.

Blanche also criticized Democrats' focus on AI policy, arguing that concerns had emerged only after months of limited attention.

The Justice Department's approach leaves broader questions about AI regulation to other federal agencies and Congress, while prosecutors continue using existing laws to address criminal conduct involving AI.
