Duffy Vows Fast Pay Relief For Unpaid Air Traffic Controllers After Shutdown Ends

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said air traffic controllers will receive 70% of their back pay within 48 hours after the government shutdown ends, offering partial relief to thousands of unpaid federal workers.

Speaking in Wisconsin, Duffy said the payment will come as a “big lump sum” to ease financial strain, with the remaining balance paid later. Federal law mandates employees be reimbursed “at the earliest date possible” once funding resumes.

Controllers missed their second full paycheck on Tuesday as the shutdown continues to disrupt air travel and strain staffing at airports nationwide.
