Eight U.S. Marines were injured when an Iranian anti-ship cruise missile reportedly struck a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on September 14, NBC News reported, citing three U.S. sources.
The Defense Department did not publicly disclose the incident or the resulting injuries at the time.
The report comes amid scrutiny over how U.S. military casualties and injuries in the Middle East are reported. The Washington Post has separately reported that some service members killed in the region were not included in official casualty figures.
The incident occurred as U.S. forces maintain a naval blockade against Iran, with the USS George Washington involved in operations in the region.
