An emergency evacuation slide deployed on the Boeing 747-8 designated for President Donald Trump at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, delaying his scheduled departure for the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas, Texas.
The aircraft, which was gifted by Qatar to the U.S. Defense Department and is valued at roughly $400 million, has faced scrutiny over its planned conversion and defensive capabilities.
Trump told reporters that the crew was “doing a check on the slide” and expected the issue to take about 15 minutes to resolve.
It was not immediately clear whether the slide deployed accidentally, during maintenance or because of a technical malfunction.
The White House had not confirmed whether Trump would continue the trip aboard the Qatari aircraft or switch to the traditional Air Force One.
