The U.S. military struck five Iranian oil tankers Tuesday, sinking one, after Iran twice attempted to attack a U.S. Navy vessel, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). No American personnel were injured, the report said.

Iran responded by firing ballistic missiles toward Jordan, claiming it was targeting U.S. military assets at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base. Jordan’s military said its defenses intercepted 18 of 20 missiles, while two landed in unpopulated areas. No deaths were reported.

The latest exchange marks another escalation as the Trump administration increases economic and military pressure on Tehran. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Iran would lose tankers whenever it targets American naval forces.

Iran also threatened commercial oil tankers near ports in Bahrain and Kuwait. Meanwhile, Washington imposed sanctions on 27 Iranian airlines and nine related service providers over alleged support for Mahan Air and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
