White House officials marked what appeared to be the final high-profile mission of one of the Boeing VC-25A aircraft that has served as Air Force One since 1990.
According to CNN, senior administration officials posted tributes to the aircraft after it returned to the Washington area following President Donald Trump's trip to Europe.
The transition comes as three Boeing 747-800 aircraft are being modified to serve as the next generation of Air Force One. The report said a specially modified jet donated by Qatar is expected to act as a bridge aircraft until two additional VC-25B planes are completed in the coming years.
The Air Force said the current VC-25A fleet will remain in service alongside the new aircraft for the time being. According to the report, the replacement jet has undergone extensive security and communications upgrades and is expected to debut later this summer.
The aging VC-25A fleet played a key role in major historical moments, including President George W. Bush's movements following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and numerous diplomatic missions around the world.
