FAA Equipment Outage Triggers Major Delays At Northeast Airports

An equipment outage at a Federal Aviation Administration air traffic control facility in Philadelphia caused significant flight disruptions Monday at several major Northeast airports.

The FAA imposed a ground stop at Newark Liberty International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport and Teterboro Airport after controllers at Philadelphia TRACON reported problems with their radio systems.

The facility manages aircraft approaching and departing from the affected airports, making the outage a potential bottleneck for regional air traffic.

The FAA said outbound delays were between 46 and 60 minutes and increasing, while arriving flights were generally facing delays of 15 minutes or less. Newark departures were delayed by about 45 minutes.

Officials expected the ground stop to be lifted by 11:15 a.m., although the FAA estimated a 30% to 60% possibility that the restriction could be extended.

Travelers were advised to check directly with their airlines for updated flight information before heading to the airport as officials worked to restore normal operations.
