Italian fashion legend Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91, the Armani Group announced Thursday. The designer, known for reshaping modern style with his understated yet elegant tailoring, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and colleagues, according to a company statement.

Armani’s influence spanned decades, from pioneering unstructured jackets to dressing Hollywood stars such as Richard Gere, Sean Connery, and Sophia Loren. His designs became staples of both red carpets and corporate boardrooms, offering women and men alike a new sartorial confidence.

Born in 1934 in Piacenza, Italy, Armani entered fashion in the late 1950s, eventually launching his own label in 1975. He expanded into multiple lifestyle ventures, from Emporio Armani to luxury hotels.

Despite the dominance of fashion conglomerates, Armani remained the sole owner of his company, valued at up to $11.7 billion in 2024. Armani’s passing leaves unanswered questions about the brand’s future leadership.
