The US Coast Guard and FBI boarded a Texas-bound oil tanker last month after discovering signs that its computer network may have been compromised by a foreign actor, according to CBS News.
The Coast Guard said specialized cyber and law enforcement teams boarded the vessel on August 21 to examine its operational and information technology systems. Officials worked with the crew and company to remove the suspected threat.
The Coast Guard did not identify the ship, but Iranian state media named it the VL Prosperity, a Liberian-flagged supertanker capable of carrying about 2.3 million barrels of oil.
US authorities have not identified the suspected attacker or disclosed the full extent of the breach. The Coast Guard said there were no reported operational disruptions, physical danger to the crew, vessel instability or environmental damage.
The incident highlights concerns over the cybersecurity of modern commercial vessels, whose critical systems are increasingly interconnected.
