A foreign hacker accessed files linked to the FBI’s investigation of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein after breaching a server at the bureau’s New York Field Office in February 2023, according to Reuters and Justice Department documents.
The intrusion occurred at the FBI’s Child Exploitation Forensic Lab after a server was accidentally left vulnerable during digital evidence processing. The breach was discovered the following day when an FBI agent found a message on the system warning that the network had been compromised.

Documents reviewed by Reuters indicate the hacker searched files related to the Epstein investigation. It remains unclear which files were accessed or whether any data was downloaded.
The FBI described the event as an isolated cyber incident and said the malicious actor was quickly blocked while the network was secured.
Officials said the hacker appeared to be a cybercriminal rather than a government actor. Investigators are still reviewing the breach and its potential impact.
