US federal courts have delivered several recent setbacks to the Trump administration in disputes involving the First Amendment, according to CNN.
This week, an Iowa judge dismissed President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against pollster J. Ann Selzer, the Des Moines Register and USA Today Co., ruling that the Iowa Poll and its coverage were protected political speech.
Hours later, federal Judge Timothy Kelly ordered the White House to restore press access for CNN, MS NOW and Politico after their credentials were revoked. The order currently lasts two weeks while the broader case proceeds.
Other disputes involve journalists, student activists, subpoenas targeting reporters and Pentagon press restrictions. Trump’s legal team is appealing some decisions, while several cases remain pending.
Media organizations and free-speech groups expect further litigation as courts continue reviewing the administration’s actions.
