A federal judge has ruled that Utah may enforce its anti-gambling laws against prediction market platform Kalshi, rejecting the company's request to block state restrictions.
According to the report, U.S. District Judge Robert Shelby found that Utah retains the authority to regulate the platform under state gambling laws despite Kalshi's argument that its event contracts are governed by federal financial regulations.
The report said Utah Governor Spencer Cox and Attorney General Derek Brown have maintained that prediction markets constitute gambling, which is prohibited under the state's laws.
Judge Shelby concluded that it was "implausible" to interpret federal legislation as overriding Utah's authority to enforce its own gambling regulations.
The ruling adds to a growing series of conflicting court decisions across the United States. The report said judges in Maryland and Nevada have also ruled against Kalshi, while courts in New Jersey and Arizona have allowed the company's prediction market operations to continue.
