Federal Prosecutors Charge ICE Officer Over Alleged False Statements

Federal prosecutors have charged U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer Christian Castro with allegedly lying to investigators about the January shooting of Venezuelan national Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis.

Authorities previously dropped charges against Sosa-Celis and another man after video evidence appeared to contradict claims that they attacked an officer with a broom handle and snow shovel. The investigation subsequently shifted toward the conduct of law enforcement officers involved in the encounter.

Minnesota authorities have separately charged Castro with assault and false reporting. He remains in Texas after the state’s governor declined to sign an extradition warrant last week.

The federal charges follow an investigation into whether initial reports of the encounter were fabricated. The case comes as public scrutiny of the Trump administration’s immigration policies continues, with a recent AP-NORC poll finding that 39% of U.S. adults approve of its handling of immigration, down from 49% earlier this year.
