Firefighting Helicopter Crashes During Yosemite’s Dome Fire Response

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m., and the National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation.

Two firefighting crew members were killed Sunday when a helicopter crashed near Mariposa, California, while supporting operations against the Dome Fire in Yosemite National Park.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m., and the National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation.

The Dome Fire began Tuesday near Wawona Dome and has burned about 3,047 acres, with nearly 500 personnel involved in the response. Firefighting contractor FlyPrecision confirmed the deaths of two members of its team, expressing condolences to their families and colleagues.

Firefighters continue to face difficult conditions, including rugged terrain, heavy smoke and gusty winds that can carry embers and create new spot fires. Fire behavior has slowed in some areas where the blaze has moved into terrain previously burned by the 2017 Empire Fire.

Authorities have not yet released details about the circumstances of the crash or identified the crew members killed. The NTSB investigation is expected to examine the aircraft, flight operations and conditions surrounding the accident.
