The Ukrainian border situation continues to remain tense and confrontational. Not much may have changed on the ground, but disturbing cracks are becoming more apparent among those who have been assuring Kyiv of assistance and security.

The fact is, there is no consensus on how to deal with Putin – appease him, deter him, thwart him, or sanction him? How should one counter the autocrat's aggressive and provocative moves? And preferably without dragging a continent into war.

The situation is tricky, to say the least, and calls for decisive leadership and adept crisis handling. But, many seem to be stumbling as the crisis drags on. A couple of very high-profile people committed major gaffes over the past few days that brought to light the confusion in the upper echelons of power.
